How long have you been in business?
Three years “officially” but I’ve worked in copywriting and editing capacities for nearly 5. I started my business in 2015 and went full time barely 9 months later.
How long were you in business before you found your groove? And how did you get there?
I would say there have been seasons of different grooves. When I first started, I was working full time and so it was a “hustle early, hustle late” period for me. Then, when I went full-time with my business, it was slower and I spent more time building my business and learning about various industries. Now that I’m 3 years in, I feel established enough to not panic whenever a new project hasn’t rolled in or if a client is late on payment. I think my lightbulb moment was when a huge client landed in my lap from a referral – I realized my work was speaking for itself.
What’s your favorite part of owning your business?
The ability to sleep in and wear sweatpants all day.
When everything seems to be going wrong, what pulls you through?
Grit and space. I step away, get out of the house, turn off email notifications, whatever I need to do. Then, when I’m in a better headspace, I dig back in. After I give myself that space, I tend to see where things went wrong or how I can improve to prevent that problem recurring.

What is your favorite process or system? What is the positive impact it has on your business?
My planner. I write down everything I need to do in a day, how much each project was “worth” and even my personal schedule. It keeps me accountable.
What’s your must-read business book?
Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. It’s not a conventional business book, but it speaks the voice we all have that says “Maybe I’m not good at this” or “Maybe I’m a one trick pony.”
My favorite quote is: “I have never created anything in my life that did not make me feel, at some point or another, like I was the guy who just walked into a fancy ball wearing a homemade lobster costume.”
What are your 1-year and 5-year goals?
- 1 year: hit $60,000 in income while still reducing my client load to 4-6 retainer clients.
- 5 year: Fortune 1000 company on retainer.
What’s one piece of advice you would give your fellow entrepreneur?
If it was easy, everyone would be doing it. Stick in there.
